Overview
Transparent PNG images allow your website background to show through areas of an image that would otherwise appear white or solid. This is especially useful for logos, overlays, and design elements that need to blend seamlessly with your website design.
In this guide, you will learn how to create and export a transparent PNG image using Adobe Photoshop. By the end, you will have a properly formatted image ready to upload to your website.
CREATE YOUR FILE IN PHOTOSHOP
Open Adobe Photoshop, then click File in the top menu and select New.
In the New Document window, enter your desired dimensions. For most PhotoBiz website backgrounds, we recommend:
Set the Background Contents option to Transparent. This ensures your image will not include a solid background.
Click Create to open your new document.
After your document opens, check the Layers panel to confirm you are working on a transparent layer. A transparent background will appear as a gray and white checkerboard pattern.
EXPORT YOUR IMAGE AS A TRANSPARENT PNG
Once your design is complete, click File, then select Export, and choose Export As.
In the Export window:
Select PNG from the Format dropdown menu.
Make sure the following options are enabled:
These settings ensure your image keeps its transparent background and displays correctly on the web.
Confirm that the image size matches your intended dimensions. You can adjust the size here if needed before exporting.
Click Export, then choose where to save your file on your computer.
UPLOAD YOUR IMAGE TO YOUR PHOTOBIZ WEBSITE
After exporting, your PNG file is ready to upload.
Log into your PhotoBiz account and upload the image anywhere images are supported, such as:
Your transparent areas will now allow your website background color or design to show through.
Why does my PNG have a white background?
Your image may have been exported without transparency enabled, or the original image may still have a white background layer. Open the file in Photoshop and check the Layers panel. The transparent area should show the gray and white checkerboard pattern before you export.
Can I make a JPG image transparent?
No. JPG files do not support transparent backgrounds. To keep transparency, export the image as a PNG.
Why is the Transparency option not working?
Make sure your Photoshop file actually contains transparent areas before exporting. If your image still has a solid background layer, remove or hide that layer before exporting the file as a PNG.
Why does my transparent PNG look different after uploading?
Check that the file was exported as a PNG with Transparency and Convert to sRGB enabled. Also review the background area where the image is placed on your website. A transparent image will show whatever background is behind it.
What size should my transparent PNG be?
The best size depends on where the image will be used. For large website background images, 3000 pixels wide by 1730 pixels tall is a good starting point. For logos, icons, and overlays, use only the size needed for the design area so the file does not become larger than necessary.
If you are in need of a LOGO DESIGN, PhotoBiz also offers a Logo Design Service where our designers will create one for you.
