How To Change The Image Shown When Sharing A Webpage To Facebook

How to Choose a Custom Image for Your Website Link on Facebook

When you share a link to your website on Facebook, the platform automatically generates a preview. This preview includes a title, description, and thumbnail image. Facebook pulls this information using Open Graph tags, which tell social networks what content to display.

By default, Facebook typically uses the first image it finds on the page. If you want more control over what appears, you can adjust your page content and refresh Facebook’s cached version.

How Facebook Chooses the Preview Image

Facebook scans your page and looks for Open Graph image data. If a specific Open Graph image is not set, it will usually display the first prominent image on the page.

This means the top image in your layout plays an important role in how your link appears when shared.

For best results:

  • Use a high-quality image.

  • Make sure the image is large enough for social sharing (at least 1200 x 630 pixels is recommended).

  • Avoid placing small icons or logos as the first image if you do not want them used as the preview.

Clear Facebook’s Cache Using the Sharing Debugger

Even after updating your page, Facebook may still show the old image. This happens because Facebook stores a cached version of your page for performance reasons.

To force Facebook to refresh:

  1. Go to the Facebook Sharing Debugger.

  2. Paste your full page URL into the tool.

  3. Click Debug.

  4. Click Scrape Again to refresh the preview.

This clears the old cached data and pulls in the updated image from your website.
