How to Add Alt Text to Product Images in PhotoBiz

Overview

Alt text is a written description of an image that helps people understand its content when using assistive technology, such as a screen reader. It can also help search engines understand product images displayed on public website pages. You can add or update alt text for each image in your PhotoBiz ECommerce product settings. This guide walks you through opening an existing product, editing its image details, and writing useful alt text.

If your product does not have images yet, follow How to Add Images to Your PhotoBiz Products first.

STEP ONE

Log into your PhotoBiz account and click ECOMMERCE in the left-side menu to open the ECommerce Dashboard.

STEP TWO

Mouse over SELL ONLINE at the top of your ECommerce Dashboard and click PRODUCTS from the dropdown menu.

This opens your product list.

STEP THREE

Click the category containing your product from the list on the left, then click the product name to open its settings.

You can also use the search field above the product list to help locate the product you want to update.

STEP FOUR

Click the image thumbnail you want to describe.

This opens the image details, where you can edit its title, caption, and alt text.

STEP FIVE

Locate the ALT TEXT field below TITLE and CAPTION, then enter a short, accurate description of the image.

Describe what the image actually shows, including relevant details such as the product’s color, material, or viewing angle. For example, an image showing an album might use “White linen photo album with an embossed gold cover.”

FINAL STEP

Click SAVE CHANGES to save your alt text.

If your product has multiple images, repeat the process for each image. Describe the view or details shown in each one so its alt text accurately reflects that image.

Tips for Writing Product Image Alt Text

Write alt text as a brief, natural description of the image. Focus on details that help someone understand the product.

  • Describe what is visible. Include relevant details such as the product type, color, material, or angle.
  • Make each description useful. If several images show different views, describe those differences.
  • Keep it concise. A short phrase or sentence is usually enough.
  • Avoid keyword stuffing. Do not add lists of search terms, locations, or services that do not describe the image.
  • Skip unnecessary introductory words. You can usually describe the product directly without starting with “image of” or “picture of.”
  • Keep descriptions accurate. Do not describe features, accessories, or options that are not shown.

Product Image Alt Text Examples

Use these examples as a starting point and adjust them to match your actual images:

Product imageExample alt text
Framed print Family portrait in a black wood frame with a white mat
Album cover Navy linen wedding album with silver embossed names
Open album Open wedding album showing a two-page ceremony photo spread
Canvas Landscape canvas wrap shown at an angle with the image extending around the edges
Greeting card Holiday photo card with a family portrait and red script lettering

What Your Clients See

Alt text describes an image for assistive technology. It serves a different purpose from the image title or caption and is not intended to add a visible product description beside the image.

If you want shoppers to read details such as dimensions, materials, included items, or available options, include that information in your product description.

Helpful Notes

Adding alt text does not change your product image order or how many images appear with a product.

Client Galleries display only the first product image. Additional product images remain available in the product settings but do not appear in the Client Gallery shopping experience.

Adding alt text can help search engines understand images on public website pages, but it does not guarantee that an image will be indexed or appear in search results.
